From the Vicar's Desk: 20th May

Dear Friends

Join with others as we wait with expectancy for the Lord, who reigns and watches over us, to send us the needed gift of His Spirit that we would honour Christ in all we do. We need the empowering of His Spirit for patience and power.

We pray
Almighty God and loving heavenly Father
that as we believe your only Son our precious Lord Jesus Christ
to have ascended into the heavens;
so we in heart and mind may also ascend,
and with him continually dwell;
Keep us in this peace until one day
His reign and rule is complete

There is so much to give thanks to God for as our Parish family and its various teams rise spectacularly to the many challenges of living for Christ together during these lockdown days. Pray specifically that we will be able to negotiate any changes smoothly and that we see an army of willing volunteers able to assist us to adapt well to our new landscape. Thank you for your prayers. To ease communication I will only write next week if I feel we need to let you know of any urgent news. Do keep an eye on our website for a revised noticesheet if you wish to keep up to date with Parish news (please send any items to Jane Mata and Sally Musson – first edition will be next week then every fortnight)

Ascension Day (Thursday 21 May)

Do join me for an evening service at 7.55pm (Facebook Live for an above average applause to the NHS – they and 40 or so key workers in our own Parish need our thanks and prayers) and then shortly afterwards on our YouTube channel tomorrow for a celebration for Ascension Day. Technically challenging so bear with me, but memory-making moments for us all to share in! Christ is above all.

Thy Kingdom Come (TKC), Ascension Day 21 May to Pentecost 31 May

May I encourage you all to pray for 5 people to know the Lord and experience His love, and if you are able, to engage in another way with the many creative TKC initiatives listed in my last letter.  Perhaps do all, or part of, the Prayer Walk with us on May 30th and wear one of those T-shirts (available from Yolanda). There is a global wave of prayer and it is exciting to be part of this initiative with so many others.

On behalf of the staff team and PCC

Thank you for your continual support in all we as a Parish are doing. We wish you all a peaceful Bank Holiday weekend.

Yours in Christ

Mark Brown
Vicar of St Peter & St Paul with St Saviour, St Philip & St Andrew

From the Vicar's Desk 14th May

Dear Friends
Pray this with me – do remember if God has done the impossible thing for us, namely changing darkness to light, we can trust Him for everything else. Being raised with joy is a here and now experience, eternal life is life which carries onto eternity that can be experienced now!
God our redeemer,

you have delivered us from the power of darkness

and brought us into the kingdom of your Son:

grant, that as by his death he has recalled us to life,

so by his continual presence in us he may raise us

to eternal joy;

through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,

who is alive and reigns with you,

in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and for ever. Amen

Thy Kingdom Come

We encourage you all, by providing the points below to join in this global prayer initiative running from Ascension Day (21 May) to Pentecost (31 May) to pray for the empowering of the Holy Spirit. An exciting aide memoire, to join us together while we are apart, will be launched during our service this Sunday and it will be available from our website afterwards.

Follow the prayer guide for Nine Days of Prayer

Pray for 5 friends or family to come to know Jesus. Draw round your hand and write a name against each finger, stick this somewhere that will remind you to pray for them daily.

Parish Prayer Walk, Saturday 30 May, walking all or part way between our four churches.  During daily exercise and practising social distancing.  Maps and briefing can be accessed HERE or from Sally (
For families the Church of England have generated a great interactive Family Prayer Adventure Map which can be downloaded HERE

Do also watch out on our website and Facebook for updates on a possible service celebration on Ascension Day.

Friendship card
Thank you all for your support with the Friendship cards launched only a week ago. There are still some available so do please make sure you collect some. They are here for you to use. Please think about how this good news card can have a message from you too of thoughtful good news for the recipient of your card – we can surely all offer something. Please note my recent on-line messages via Facebook and on our website with the central message of John 3:16. There is a series of 6 talks, last one today, and there will be 3 more coming up for people to take a step of faith. I am signposting them to others and you might care to think about doing the same.

Sermons by dialling….
Last week I provided a heads-up for a new accessible telephone link for those not on email or internet access.  I am pleased to say that this is now up and running. All you need to do is dial the Parish Office number 01732 770962 (local call rates apply) and then enter the extension you wish from the selection below.

These include shortened versions of the latest Sunday morning service, Sunday evening reflection, Wednesday worship and also a short reading, reflection and prayer which Sally is providing:

Ext 50        Sunday morning service

Ext 51        Sunday evening reflection

Ext 52        Wednesday morning worship

Ext 60        Reading, reflection and prayer 'A Timely Thought'  (3-4 minutes)

One family
We are writing to some 80 or so members who do not have access online. Do pray that this letter ministry and the caller ministry they receive will be a blessing and they too would know we are one Parish family seeking, as one, to draw on the grace of Christ and reach out to others in our community with God’s love.

On-line services

Thank you for your feedback on our online services. I am so glad our work with young families is appreciated – thank you to all the volunteers for their contributions.

Through these platforms we can very easily invite others to join in and watch the services or like our Facebook page. Many of you are already familiar with the digital world but I am aware that some of it may be new to others. Here are some simple tips to invite others along just with a click.

You can subscribe to our YouTube channel
If you are on Facebook you can like our page and invite your friends to like our page.  But remember you don’t have to be on FB to see the page just open your internet browser and you can see Mark’s thought for the day and all the news on forthcoming events.
WhatsApp groups are great to send a link to a talk (FB or Website)
And the word is spread quickly

We will produce an easy to follow guide to the suggestions mentioned and others and this will be available for you to see on our website. Or do ask Yolanda for it.

From the Finance Team
Our Treasurer, Les Naylor, and the team would like to thank you for your support during these difficult times. An update on our finances will be available on our website, on our new  Parish Newsletter On-Line, and if you have any questions do please contact us or

Saturday Prayers and Staff Prayer Day

I would like to highlight on this edition of FVD that our Saturday Prayer group that would normally meet at St Peter & St Paul at 9am are now meeting via Zoom. If anyone would like to be added to the mailing list for the invitation to the weekly zoom for this, you would be very welcome. Do please email Richard Roberts

On Tuesday 19th May our Staff Team are dedicating this day to prayer guided by me. We would appreciate if emails and phone calls were kept to a minimum on that day. We continue to appreciate Sally Musson’s Ministry which has been confirmed with her Licencing at Chiddingstone with Chiddingstone Causeway this afternoon.

And lastly may I encourage you to keep checking our website for updates on all that goes on in the life of the parish and beyond. You may be encouraged to read the latest news on our Mission Partners.

May the Lord be with you.
